Low-Cost and Portable Electrochemical Sensor for Heavy Metal Detection in Water Developed
Clean water and sanitation is one of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, supported by 193 countries all over the world. In the Philippines, nearly 5 million Filipinos rely on unsafe and unsustainable water sources (Water.org, 2021). With a growing population, especially in urban areas, water pollution, wasteful and inefficient use of water, and forest denudation in watersheds, the country’s water resources remained to be threatened (ADB, 2012). Additionally, water contamination due to increase in demand of gold and other mining products affect nearby water bodies which eventually lead to serious diseases among the settlers. Fortunately, in 2019, Dr. Shirley T. Palisoc of the National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) Scientific Division of Physics spearheaded the Project titled, Development of Low-Cost and Portable Electrochemical Sensor for Heavy Metal Detection in Water.

International Science Council Vice President to address researchers in upcoming NRCP annual scientific conference
Professor Anne Husebekk
ISC Vice President for Freedom and Responsibility in Science
The National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) recently confirmed its Keynote Speaker for its anticipated Annual Scientific Conference and 89th General Membership Assembly, to be held on March 15, 2022. Professor Anne Husebekk, International Science Council (ISC) Vice President for Freedom and Responsibility in Science, will tackle “Digital Transformation in Research: Powers and Perils,” the conference’s main theme.
The Council seeks to shed light on the opportunities, applications, and implications of the digital transformation, particularly in research. Prof. Husebekk will share perspective on how digital technologies shape research processes, and how digital transformation give rise to salient issues, perils and challenges in the conduct, funding, and the ethics of research. It is widely held that COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digital transformation, thus impacted how research is conducted across disciplines and fields such as the social sciences, natural sciences, and the humanities.
A former Rector and Vice Chancellor at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the world’s northernmost university, Prof. Anne Husebekk held various leadership positions in international societies, research councils and academies in Norway and the arctic region, until her most recent election as Vice President at the ISC. A physician by training with a specialization in immunology and transfusion medicine, her research interest are climate and the environment, and health and geopolitics.
The NRCP, a collegial body and research think tank attached to the Department of Science and Technology, is composed of over 4000 scientists, researchers, engineers and specialists and artists.
For membership and public safety, the conference will be conducted online, like the NRCP’s two previous annual conferences. The NRCP was among the first organizations to quickly shift to online means to conduct major conferences when the pandemic escalated in March 2020.
The final line up of speakers, scientific sessions, awards, and business meeting will be announced periodically leading to the event.
