Visayas Researchers to Tackle Science, Innovation, and Human Capital for Sustainability in Upcoming DOST-NRCP Conference

Researchers, educators, and industry experts will explore how science, technology, social innovation, and human capital can help address sustainability challenges faced by communities in the Visayas during the Annual Scientific Conference (ASC) and the 22nd National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP)-Visayas Regional Cluster Assembly (VRC) to be held in Iloilo City on June 13, 2025.
NRCP, an agency under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), organized the event in partnership with the University of San Agustin and DOST Region VI.
Themed “Empowering a Sustainable Future: Science, Technology, Social Innovation, and Human Capital in Global Challenges,” the conference will highlight pressing barriers to implementing science, technology, and innovation (STI) initiatives in the Visayas. It will also offer recommendations to strengthen regional efforts and align human capital with current industry needs.
Scientific sessions will focus on three (3) key areas: 1) the current Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) landscape in the Visayas; 2) harnessing blockchain and decentralized science to drive innovation in the region; and 3) the role of the education sector in sustainable futures research.
These key areas will be discussed by experts, including Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga, Regional Director of DOST VI and member of the NRCP Division of Engineering and Industrial Research; Dr. Joemar Taganna, Chief Executive Officer of Paytaca; and Dr. Patricia Anne G. Nazareno, Associate Professor at the University of the Philippines Cebu and member of the NRCP Division of Chemical Sciences.
The conference will also showcase selected research posters from various scientific disciplines to encourage dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and potential collaborations among participants.
The general membership assembly and business meeting will be held in the afternoon to discuss ongoing programs, review accomplishments, and plan future research initiatives. An oath-taking ceremony will also be conducted to welcome new NRCP VRC Chair and Vice Chair, along with newly-approved associate and regular NRCP members.
ASC and VRC Assembly serve as platforms for researchers and stakeholders to exchange ideas, build partnerships, and strengthen science-driven strategies for addressing the sustainability challenges unique to the Visayas. The event emphasizes DOST’s focus on sustainability through disaster preparedness, environmental conservation, improved education, and inclusive regional economic growth.
