NRCP Highlights Key Achievements and Plans during DOST Visit

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary for Research and Development Leah J. Buendia visited the DOST-National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) on March 18, 2025, to assess the progress of NRCP’s technology transfer pathways and research information dissemination activities. The visit also included a review of the status of DOST-Grants-In-Aid (GIA) projects implemented and monitored by NRCP, as well as discussions on addressing unliquidated balances and the council’s current plans for 2025.
During the meeting, NRCP Executive Director Bernardo N. Sepeda presented key knowledge products and technologies from NRCP and DOST-funded projects, including developments in soil health assessment, cryopreservation, education policies, tourism promotion, and energy resource monitoring, among others. Director Sepeda also provided updates on the development of the NRCP’s backup electrical system needed to ensure the continuity and efficiency of the Council’s operations.

Undersecretary Buendia acknowledged NRCP’s efforts in advancing scientific research, innovation, and knowledge dissemination. She urged the agency to expand international and interagency collaborations to align research initiatives with existing programs and suggested enhancing technology transfer mechanisms, developing a standardized impact assessment framework for basic research projects, and increasing the dissemination of knowledge.
To further strengthen the impact of research outputs, NRCP President Aimee Lynn A. Barrion-Dupo recommended aligning basic research proposals with DOST’s Four Pillars, namely, Promotion of Human Well-being, Wealth Creation, Wealth Protection, and Sustainability. By ensuring early alignment in the evaluation process, the technical evaluators can prioritize proposals with measurable contributions to NRCP’s priority research thrusts. NRCP President Dupo pledged to explore ways to advance the application of research discoveries from basic research projects monitored by the Council. On the administrative side, she stated that NRCP will revamp the monitoring system to expedite the liquidation of project funds. In addition, Dupo conveyed appreciation for Undersecretary Buendia’s support and leadership in driving forward NRCP’s initiatives. (Kareena Ynez A. Abungin, S&T Media Service)
