DOST-NRCP Showcases Biotech Innovations at National Biotechnology Week 2024
The Department of Science and Technology-National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP), actively participated in the National Biotechnology Week (NBW) 2024, held from November 25 to 29, 2024 at the EB Copeland Gymnasium, University of the Philippines Los Baños. In line with its mandate to promote scientific and technological culture to all sectors of society, NRCP showcased its research findings and initiatives in biotechnology.
Theme “#experienceBIOTECH: Expand the Future of Biotechnology through Education, Innovation, and Commercialization,” the event provided a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders from academia, industry, and government.
NRCP hosted an informative booth alongside with the Commission of Higher Education (CHED), Department of Agriculture (DA), other Department of Science and Technology (DOST) agencies, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Health (DOH), and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The booth attracted over 600 visitors who explored the Council’s innovative projects and collected publications.
NRCP showcased a selection of its impactful completed projects that demonstrate the transformative potential of biotechnology in addressing critical societal and environmental challenges. The featured projects included:
- Mangrove-Derived Yeasts as Protein Sources for Feed and Food Supplements. This project highlights the importance of mangroves as source of unique microorganisms, such as protein-rich yeasts, with immense potential for sustainable food production.
- Assessing Lake Lanao’s Water Quality Using Protozoans as Bio-Indicators. This research leverages protozoans as biological indicators to monitor water quality, informing policy decisions for the preservation of Lake Lanao.
- Women Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Fisheries: Impacts on Biodiversity of Rivers in the Samar Island Natural Park (SINP). This project documents the crucial role of women in indigenous communities and their traditional fishing practices that contribute to biodiversity conservation in SINP.
- Towards Sustainable Production of Semi-temperate Vegetables and Strawberry in Mountain Province and Benguet. This research introduces innovative cultivation techniques to enhance the productivity and sustainability of agriculture in the Cordillera region.
NRCP’s participation underscores its commitment to leveraging biotechnology for sustainable development and promoting public awareness about its research endeavours.
