Governing Board

Dr. Ramon A. Razal is Professor 12 in the Dept. of Forest Products and Paper Science (FPPS) of the UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), where he teaches Wood Chemistry, Non-Timber Forest Products, and many other courses. He was also recently named UP Scientist 2 for 2015-17. He is married to the former Mildred M. Burgos with whom he has four children namely Raian, Reana, Rinna and Rozel.

Dr. Razal was Dean of the UPLB CFNR from January 2002 until January 2008. Prior to becoming dean, he served as CFNR Associate Dean, Director of Training Center for Tropical Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability (TREES), and Chair of the Department of Wood Science and Technology (WST). During his term as Dean, the Philippine Forestry Education Network (PFEN) was organized and the former Philippine Forest Research Society was revitalized to become the Forests and Natural Resources Research Society of the Philippines (FORESPI). It was also during his stint as dean that the Master of Science in Natural Resources Conservation was instituted as a new graduate degree program in UPLB.

He graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Forest Products Engineering (cum laude) from UPLB in 1978. He obtained the Masters of Science in Forestry (major in Wood Science and Technology) in 1983 also from UPLB and the PhD degree in Forestry and Forest Products from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1990. Among his non-academic involvements include serving as President of the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture UPLB Chapter in 2011-2012, Honorary Member of the Society of Filipino Foresters, Inc. (SFF) since 2005, member of the Board of Trustees of the Non-Timber Forest Products Exchange Programme since 2011, and 2015 President of the Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas - Southern Tagalog (KKP-ST).

He was project leader of the Integrated UPLB Program on Non-Timber Forest Products where he was involved in the study on NTFP policies. He authored along with Dr. Armando Palijon, the 2009 book entitled “Non-Wood Forest Products of the Philippines” and in 2012, was senior author of the book “Mainstreaming Engineered-Bamboo Products for Furniture and Construction He recently completed the “Scoping Study on Cutting-Edge Technology and Strategic Knowledge on NTFPs for the Green Economy” and the “AEC Impact Study on Social Forestry and Forest Products Trade.” Currently, he is the project leader of the DOST-PCIERD project on forest products nanotechnology which seeks to use bamboo cellulosic nanocrystals for a variety of novel applications. He has published a number of articles for which he received the UP International Publication Awards and several of his works are cited by other researchers in the field. In extension, he served as Coordinator and Resource Person for the thrice-offered (2013-2015), PCAARRD-sponsored “Training-Workshop on Sustainable Small and Medium-Scale Bamboo Enterprises for the Green Economy.”  He is a member of the Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Product Standards Technical Committee on Bamboo and Rattan.

His other awards include several UP professorial chairs, the 1998 UPLB Most Outstanding Teacher Award in the Physical Sciences, the 1999 KKP-ST Achievement Award in Teaching, the 2008 Mancono Award given by the CFNRAA Alumni Association, the 2008 UPLB Outstanding Alumnus Award, the PCAARRD Scholars Association Instruction Award in 2008, and the FORESPI Most Outstanding Scientist in Forest Utilization Research in 2010.

Dr. Maricar S. Prudente is presently a Full Professor of the Science Education Department of De La Salle University-Manila. She finished her BSE degree major in Natural Sciences from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila as a city government scholar, and obtained her Masters degree in Teaching Physics at De La Salle University-Manila.  Professor Prudente completed her Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology at Ehime University as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Ronpaku Fellow.

As an educator, Dr. Prudente has served as administrator in various capacities at De La Salle University-Manila. Presently, she is the Academic Chairperson of the Science Education Department and the Research Director of the Lasallian Institute for Development and Educational Research (LIDER). Dr. Prudente has also served as a resource person, facilitator and coordinator in various seminars, workshops and training programs dealing with research, environmental issues and science education, specifically in the recent trainings of research managers of the 122 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the Philippines, in the Department of Education’s Schools Superintendents Leadership Training Program and in the Action Research Seminar-Workshops for basic education teachers in the country.

As a researcher, Dr. Prudente has been actively conducting researches on environmental monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants and to date has published 40 scientific research articles in high-impact peer-reviewed ISI journals. Her involvement in research was recognized in 2015 when she was awarded the Lasallian Pillar of Excellence in Research by De La Salle University-Manila. Currently her recent Google Scholar profile shows her total citations at 2966 and an h-index of 27, placing her 2nd in rank among Philippine Scientists.

Dr. Prudente is one of the recipients of the 2015 National Achievement Award of the National Research Council of the Philippines in view of her research works in Science and Science Education. Her recent research involvements include: as the Research Team Leader of a UNIDO-funded research on National Inventory of POPs in the Philippines; as Lead researcher of the DOST-NRCP Project no. A-100 entitled “Drawing Best Practices of Community Adaptation to Climate Change: Implications to Institutional Program Development”; and as Assistant Project Leader of the 3rd Graduate Tracer Study funded by the Commission on Higher Education. In the field of science education, Dr. Prudente’s research work is focused on action research and the integration of technology and  21st century skills in the teaching of science.

As an ecotoxicologist, she has been actively participating in numerous international research projects and scientific conferences dealing with environmental issues and concerns either as a participating scientist, resource person or as facilitator. Dr. Prudente is likewise involved in an international cooperative research project on the Monitoring of New POPs in Human Breast Milk in Southeast Asian countries under a Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) Research Grant and as collaborating scientist on a research project with Kumamoto University funded by Japan Science and Technology (JST), which dealt with monitoring the chemical pollutants in central Visayas affected by typhoon Haiyan.

Among her peers, Dr. Prudente has served as the National President of the JSPS Fellows Alumni Association of the Philippines for FY 2012-2014. Moreover, Prof. Prudente is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Environmental Science as well as a reviewer of a number of scientific journals in her field. She is also one of the Roster of Experts on POPs of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

For AY2016-2018, Dr. Prudente will sit as a Member of the Governing Board and Chairperson of Division 1 (Educational, Govenmental and International Policies) of the National Research Council of the Philippines.
