NSTEP Visayas to hold its first Research Forum on March 25

The NRCP Science and Technology Experts’ Pool (NSTEP) Visayas will hold a Research Forum on March 25, 2022, 9am-12nn via Zoom to showcase the five completed researches in the region funded by NSTEP project. The NRCP S&T Experts Pool (NSTEP) is a three-year Project implemented by the National Research Council of the Philippines in partnership with the DOST Regional Offices for capability enhancement of the regions in terms of research, evidence-based policy-making, and capacity building for strengthened R&D manpower.

The establishment of NSTEP in the regions provides a mechanism to expand the number of researchers, scientists, engineers and artists (RSEAs) geographically across the country and enable them to become critical assets to stimulate regional development.

The 1st NSTEP Visayas Research Forum will highlight the first five completed researches funded in Year 1 of NSTEP. Three (3) COVID-19-related projects will be presented namely, “Funeral Tradition Alterations Due to COVID-19 Pandemic Health Protocols among Urban Filipino Catholics in Central Visayas” by Dr. Albert C. Albina, “Online Well-being Development Program for College Students during COVID-19”, by Dr Resti Tito H. Villarino, and “Assessing mental health needs and psychological adjustments of community-dwelling adults in the context of extended pandemic lockdown in Tacloban City” by Dr. Meredith D. Labarda. On the other hand, the environmental category will feature two (2) projects: “Assessing urban poor communities' utilization and LGU's management of public water wells towards water security and participatory governance in Cebu City” by Engr. Christine Omela V. Ocampo, and “Multi-Stakeholder's Knowledge, Attitude and Practices on Poultry in the Provinces of Leyte and Southern Leyte” by Dr. Ana Marquiza M. Quilicot.

Local government units (LGUs) and community-based organizations will also be invited as reactors to promote utilization of research results. The event is in line with NSTEP’s objective of providing funding to local RSEAS that will undertake critical researches in aid of science-based policy making and program design that are responsive to the location-specific needs of the regions.

NSTEP seeks to identify globally competitive Filipino RSEAs in the regions and enlist them at the NRCP. Through the project, NRCP has added a total of new 233 NRCP Members since 2020, of which 127 came from the Visayas Region.   NSTEP Visayas is chaired by DOST RO VI Director, Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga. Completing the NSTEP Visayas Execom are DOST RO VII Director, Engr. Jesus Zamora, Jr., DOST RO VIII Director Ernesto M. Granada, Dr. Doralyn S.
