Research Council joins national quincentennial commemoration with public lectures

Honoring the heroism and bravery of Filipinos for the last 500 years, the National Research Council of the Philippines joins the nationwide celebration of the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP) through its Quincentennial Public Lectures and Events.

With the theme: “Breakthroughs for Solidarity,” NRCP’s commemoration will kick-off with the first public lecture on June 14, 2021, featuring two prominent speakers.

The first speaker is Dr. Maria Serena Diokno, Professor Emeritus from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. With her talk titled “Historicizing the Present,” she will discuss how the modern Philippine landscape has been shaped by past events including during the pre-colonial periods.

Meanwhile, the second speaker, Prof. Randolf David, a known columnist and Professor Emeritus from UP Diliman, will talk on “Quincentennial Commemorations: A Search for National Meaning.”

Other lectures are as follows:

  • July 15: Homo luzonensis: New Species of Ancient Human by Dr. Armand Salvador B. Mijares, UP Diliman; The Pre-Colonial Period in Cordilleran Historiography by Dr. Maria Nela B. Florendo, UP Baguio.
  • August 18: Pre- Colonial Eastern Visayas in Alcina’s Historia de Bisayas by Dr. Rolando O. Borrinaga, UP Manila-Palo Leyte Campus; Saving the Historic Lapu-Lapu form Myths and Misconceptions by Dr. Jose Eleazar R. Bersales, University of San Carlos
  • September 8: The Mamanwa: Challenging the Peopling Historiography in the Philippines by Dr. Ramil D. Tamaquin, Surigao del sur State University; Lumad and Bangsamoro Resistance and Identity by Prof. Arnold P. Alamon, Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology.
  • October 13: Pathways of Philippine Development Through Time by Prof. Solita C. Munsod, UP Diliman
  • November 17: International Feature for Spain in the Quincentennial Commemorations by Dr. Antonio Sanchez de Mora, Chief Archivist from Archivo General de Indias; International Feature for Portugal in the Quincentinial Commemorations by Dr. Jose Manuel Marquez.

Aside from the public lectures, the NRCP will also launch a Painting Competition to harness the creativity of high school and college students in relation to the commemoration theme.
