Aimed at bolstering a science culture in the Philippines, the Department of Science and Technology- National Science Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) will launch its Back to Basic (B2B) Season 2 online class on March 28, 2022, 10:00 am to 11:30 am, via online.

B2B online class is an avenue to present difficult theories or science concepts in an easy-to-understand and interactive manner using videos and infographics for kids, students, and teachers. NRCP experts and scientists serve as resource persons. The first season of the B2B concluded in June to December 2021 and it featured topics on Modern Geometries, Infection Busters, Non-internet Based Modality for Remote Learning, among others.

Meanwhile, B2B Season 2 will start on March 28, 2022 with topics focused on earth and space, physics, plants, and genomics. These selected topics are aligned with the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) which are adopted in the Grade 10 Curriculum.

To assess the effectiveness of the materials prepared, 16 students from St. Genevieve School of Pateros will serve as B2B cohort. At the end of the season, the students will provide feedback whether the materials used and the lecture series were effective in helping them understand the topics.

Moreover, top five students will be selected and awarded a plaque of excellence. Students who are not part of the cohort, or those who will participate online via zoom, will receive a Certificate of Appreciation for each completed episode. Meanwhile, students who will participate on the quiz in the BRITER Commons will receive Certificate of Completion.

Kicking Off with Volcanic Eruptions: When beauty becomes beast

Dr. Ma. Mylene Martinez-Villegas, a member of NRCP Earth and Space Division, and a geologist from the DOST-Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), will open the B2B Season 2 with her lecture titled, “Volcanic eruptions: When beauty becomes the beast.”

Villegas will discuss the different characteristics of volcanoes, how they are formed, and the different volcanic hazards.

In an online interview with Dr. Villegas, she shared that while volcanoes are fascinating spectacles, they can also have devastating impacts when they erupt. More about volcanoes are expected to be discovered this coming March 28. Interested participants may register at https://tinyurl.com/B2BSeason2Ep1 b2b volcano
