DOST-NRCP RDLead Advances Marble Research and Innovation at Romblon State University
ODIONGAN, ROMBLON –– The Department of Science and Technology-National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP), through its RDLead FIRE (Enhanced Research and Development Leadership to Foster an Inclusive Research Ecosystem) Program, conducted the workshop “Strengthening Institutional Research through Policy Development and Bioplastics Innovation for Marble Waste Valorization” at Romblon State University (RSU) from June 22 to 24, 2026.
Led by RD Leader Dr. Mitch-Irene Kate G. Oyales, the three-day workshop brought together RSU faculty members and researchers to strengthen institutional research capabilities through project management, policy development, and bioplastics innovation, while addressing challenges in marble waste management in Romblon Province. Mr. Rogel Jan B. Butalid, Dr. Eligia D. Clemente, and Mr. Mark Jeffry De Leon of the University of the Philippines Diliman Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (DMMME) also helped enrich the workshop sessions.
The workshop featured lectures and hands-on activities on project management, collaborative discussions on policy recommendations for sustainable marble waste management, and laboratory exercises demonstrating the potential use of marble by-products in bioplastics production. Representatives from government agencies, local stakeholders, and the academe also participated in the focus group discussion, reinforcing a multi-sectoral approach to developing research-informed solutions for the local marble industry.
In his opening message, RSU Vice President for Research, Extension, Development and Innovation Dr. Eddie G. Fetalvero emphasized the value of the RDLead Program in strengthening the University’s research culture and producing meaningful research outputs. Meanwhile, Dr. Oyales and RDLead Project Senior Technical Specialist Mr. Marfy H. Lita encouraged participants to transform the knowledge gained during the workshop into collaborative research initiatives that will benefit both the University and the region.
The workshop concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to advancing research and innovation in marble waste valorization.
The NRCP RDLead FIRE Program continues to strengthen research leadership in higher education institutions and promote science-driven, sustainable solutions that address local development challenges.
