DR. LESLIE E. BAUZON served the Filipino people as a Professor of History in the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City. After graduating with an AB degree in 1964 from Silliman University in Dumaguete City, where he worked his way through college as a messenger and manual mimeograph machine operator in the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, he proceeded via a scholarship award from the Rotary Club of DeLand, Florida to earn in 1965 his MA at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, USA. Then he obtained in 1970 his PhD in history at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, USA through grants from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, Institute of International Education, Duke University Readership, and Duke University Committee on International Studies.

Dr. Bauzon is the author, among other studies, of the frequently cited work in the Social Sciences and Humanities International Citation Index, Deficit Government: Mexico and the Philippine Situado, 1606-1804 (Tokyo, Japan: The Centre for East Asian Cultural Studies, 1981); Agrarian Reform, Rural Development and the Philippine Nation-State in Mutsuo Yamada (ed.), Rural Development in Developing Countries (Osaka: Japan Center for Area Studies, National Museum of Ethnology, 1999; in Nihonggo), pp. 73-102; People of the Upstream: A Reconstruction of Manobo Social Reality (Quezon City: UP CSSP Publications, 1999) and is the co-author of A Concise History of the Philippines (USA: Grolier International, 1982) as well as the co-editor of A Comparative Study of Traditional Paddy Growing Communities in Southeast Asia and Japan (Kyoto: Department of Sociology, Ryukoku University, 1979).

Dr. Bauzon is the editor of A Comparative Study of Peasant Unrest in Southeast Asia (Singapore: Southeast Asian Studies Program, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, 1991). He was the principal investigator of the completed WHO-CSSP-funded project entitled "The Role and Application of the Social Sciences in the Control and Eradication of the Tropical Diseases of Malaria, Leprosy and Schistosomiasis in the Philippines;" and the director of the completed "Surigao Archaeological and Ethnohistorical Project" jointly undertaken with the National Museum of the Philippines to advance knowledge on Philippine prehistoric chronology and culture, with financial support largely from the Toyota Foundation of Tokyo as well as the Daiwa Bank Foundation for Asia and Oceania. He collaborated with his wife Aurora F. Bauzon in undertaking, completing and publishing the project entitled "A Comparative Study of Childrearing Practices in the Philippines and Japan" with funding assistance from the Sumitomo Foundation of Tokyo.

Dr. Bauzon has served as Chair of the UP Department of History (1974-1977); Dean of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (1983-1989); President of the International Association of Historians of Asia (IAHA) from 1980 to1983 and Convenor of the 9th IAHA Conference successfully held in tumultuous Manila in November 1983; President of the Philippine National Historical Society and Editor of its Journal of History (1983-1994); and Chairman of the Philippine Social Science Council (1991-1993). He was Visiting Research Scholar at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University, Japan in 1979-1980; Visiting Professor in the Graduate School of Area Studies of the University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba Science City, Japan in 1994-1997; Visiting Professor in the Department of History, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia in February, 1998; Visiting Professor in the Japan Center for Area Studies, National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, Japan in January-February 2000; Visiting Foreign Research Fellow in the Institute of Philosophy and Religion, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba Science City, Japan in August-December 2000; and Professor of Southeast Asian Studies in the Graduate School of Area Studies and Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities Doctoral Program in International Political Economy, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba Science City, Japan from April 1, 2002 to June 30 2007.

Dr. Bauzon has participated in numerous conferences and meetings held in the US, Japan, Mexico, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, China, Libya, Holland and Turkey, as well as travelled to Hong Kong, Hawaii, France, Spain, Italy and Dubai. In April 1983, he received the "Most Outstanding Faculty Member for 1983" Award from the UP Alpha Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, The International Social Science Honor Society; and in August 1989, Silliman University conferred upon him the Outstanding Sillimanian Award in Education and History. On April 12, 2011, the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy and the Social Sciences and Philosophy Research Foundation awarded him a Plaque of Recognition "in grateful and lasting appreciation for his exemplary leadership, selfless service, and unwavering commitment as the first dean of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy from 1983 to 1989, and as the founder of the Social Sciences and Philosophy Research Foundation which came into existence in 1987. This recognition honors the achievements of his administration that laid the institutional and operational mechanisms of the College geared toward advancing the fields of social sciences and philosophy in the 1980s."
