Participants to the Stakeholders’ Forum on Coastal Zone Protection, Tacloban City, 16 March 2018.

The National Research Council of the Philippines co-organized the “Stakeholders’ Forum on the Protection of the Coastal Zones of the City of Tacloban and the Municipalities of Tanauan and Palo” last 16 March 2018 at the Ironwood Hotel in Tacloban City. The forum was spearheaded by the DOST- Leyte Provincial Office under the supervision of the DOST Region VIII, by its directors Engr. Glenn Ocaňa and Engr. Ed Esperancilla, respectively. Other major partners were the Wetlands International, the Netherlands Red Cross, and the Partners for Resilience (PfR) 2016-2020 Project.

Around fifty (50) stakeholders shared knowledge and information on the status of the coastal and marine ecosystems and its sustainable use, as well as the current activities for the management and protection of the shorelines from Tacloban City to Palo and Tanauan --- the three worst-hit areas by supertyphoon Haiyan on 8 November 2013.   Aside from the representatives of local government units of these three areas, the stakeholders in attendance included representatives from the DENR, PENRO, DPWH, Office of Civil Defense, Philippine Reclamation Authority, Visayas State University, and NEDA.

Aside from updating the stakeholders, the forum generated insights on the future management of the coastal zones in order to reduce risk to flooding and to adapt to climate change.  The importance of mangrove reforestation program was highlighted with the resolve that said program must consider planting the right species, at the right time and right place in the right way.
